German-Brazilian conductor Luiz de Godoy is among the most internationally active Black classical musicians of his generation. Alongside his work as a conductor, he is widely recognized as an educator, teaching orchestral conducting and transcultural music pedagogy at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre.
Since 2019, he has played a key role in reshaping accessible pathways for young musicians in Hamburg, introducing new approaches grounded in international expertise and best practices. Until 2025, he led the development of the children’s and youth choir at the Hamburg State Opera, and since 2021, he has served as Artistic Director of the Hamburg Boys’ Choir, guiding its transformation into a coeducational, inclusive choir school and ensemble of social and artistic excellence.
At the Hamburg State Opera, he has conducted over fifty performances since 2020, including the world premieres of Frühlings Erwachen (Ludger Vollmer) and the chamber version of A Trip to the Moon (Die Reise zum Mond, Andrew Norman). In 2019, he made his debut at the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein with Stravinsky’s The Firebird and the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has a particular affinity for the choral-symphonic repertoire and has performed, among other works, the complete masses of Mozart as well as Bach’s oratorios.
As a chorus director, he has collaborated with leading orchestras and conductors, appearing at Carnegie Hall with Kent Nagano, with the Vienna Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, Franz Welser-Möst, and Gustavo Dudamel, and with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle.
Luiz de Godoy zählt zu den international profiliertesten brasilianischen Dirigenten seiner Generation. Tätig zudem als Chorleiter und Pädagoge, lehrt er Orchesterleitung sowie transkulturelle Musikpädagogik an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg.
Seit 2019 prägt er die musikalische Nachwuchsförderung der Hansestadt mit neuen Impulsen, die auf internationaler Expertise und Best Practices basieren. So verantwortete er bis 2025 den Aufbau des Kinder- und Jugendchores der Hamburgischen Staatsoper und ist seit 2021 als künstlerischer Leiter für die Weiterentwicklung des Hamburger Knabenchores zu einer koedukativen, sozial zugänglichen Chorschule und einem Exzellenzensemble verantwortlich.
An der Hamburgischen Staatsoper dirigierte er seit 2020 über fünfzig Vorstellungen, darunter die Uraufführungen von Frühlings Erwachen (Ludger Vollmer) sowie der Kammerfassung von Die Reise zum Mond (Andrew Norman). 2019 gab er sein Debüt im Goldenen Saal des Wiener Musikvereins mit Strawinskys Der Feuervogel und dem ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien. Dem chorsinfonischen Repertoire ist er besonders verbunden und führte unter anderem sämtliche Messen Mozarts sowie Oratorien Bachs auf.
Kooperationen als Chordirektor mit renommierten Orchestern und Dirigent:innen führten ihn unter anderem in die Carnegie Hall mit Kent Nagano, zu den Wiener Philharmonikern mit Zubin Mehta, Franz Welser-Möst und Gustavo Dudamel sowie zu den Berliner Philharmonikern und zum Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks mit Sir Simon Rattle.
Luiz de Godoy é um dos maestros brasileiros de maior projeção internacional de sua geração. Radicado na Alemanha, leciona regência orquestral e pedagogia musical transcultural na Hochschule für Musik und Theater de Hamburgo. Apontado para a direção artística do Hamburger Knabenchor em 2021, estreou com o grupo naquele ano, junto aos músicos da NDR Elbphilharmonie-Orchester, regendo o Oratório de Natal de Bach com transmissão pela Rádio Estatal NDR. Na Ópera Estatal, regeu 55 récitas entre 2020 e 2025, entre elas a estreia de Frühlings Erwachen (Ludger Vollmer) e da versão de câmara de Die Reise zum Mond (Andrew Norman).
Desde 2010, atua na direção de coros junto às orquestras e aos maestros de maior renome internacional, como as Filarmônicas de Viena e Berlim, a Cleveland Orchestra, a Orquestra Sinfônica da Rádio da Baviera, a Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, e maestros como Gustavo Dudamel, Ton Koopman, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle e Simone Young. Junto a Kent Nagano, estreou no Carnegie Hall em 2023.
Em 2019, esteve à frente da ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester no Musikverein de Viena, integrando assim o seleto hall de brasileiros a reger uma orquestra estatal austríaca na legendária Sala Dourada – sendo o único negro – ao lado de Villa-Lobos e Eleazar de Carvalho.
